The corner sofa is a twentieth century idea, whose time came with the demise of the large country house, at the beginning of the century, with all its formal drawing room seating. This, combined with the arrival of the radio, and then the television, suddenly produced a need for informal seating where people could listen and watch, no longer facing each other on sofas, but grouped all in a corner, everyone looking in the same direction.
This informal living, where suddenly watching was more important than talking, meant that our seating needs also changed. We wanted to lounge more, and heaven forbid, put our feet up. So the corner sofa became deeper and softer, a place to relax and doze, watch and read.
