Sofas and Stuff and Sightseeing-Fittleworth

15 November 2011

We're addicted to great sofas (and stuff). However, we also understand that there are other things you might rather be doing with your day off than shopping for new furniture. Shocking, we know. So we thought we'd arm you with everything you need to turn your trip to the Sofas and Stuff Showroom into a great day out. Last month we armed you with loads of great tips to make the most out of your visit to our new Tunbridge Wells showroom. Today we're taking you back to where it all began, to our very first showroom in Fittleworth, West Sussex.

Fittleworth is a scenic hour and a half's drive out of central London. The nearest town is antiques haven Petworth - a great place to pick up some classic interior accessories that match your brand new sofa. Whilst you're there, check out Petworth House- the gorgeous gardens are the work of landscaping legend Capability Brown. It's a National Trust property with a great art collection and an amazingly well preserved Victorian kitchen.

An absolute must-see is the West Dean Estate and Gardens, which houses an amazing collection of surrealist art. There's loads by Salvador Dali including the famous Mae West lips sofa, one of only five ever made. If you're craving some more art after that why not head into Chichester? The Pallant Gallery has a great collection by artists including David Hockney, Man Ray, Magritte, Dali and Henry Moore.

If you've got the kids in tow, our top tip is to take them to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. There's farm animals, walks through the woods and a lake with ducks. There's also a collection of around 50 historic buildings from the 13th - 19th century that are fun to explore.

Our final tip for the day is that you should investigate going to glorious Goodwood. Whether you're there for the horses, the cars, the golf, the day spa or even the farm shop, it's a great place to spend an escapist afternoon. It's only 25 minutes from the showroom and is on the way back to London if you're visiting from the city.
